Keep Bishopscourt Green! Save our Green, Save our Trees!

I used to live in Wilton Park House, when the surrounding land was the 100 acre farm owned by the SMA Fathers, and used to provide supplies for the seminary, which was the building behind St Joseph's church. The Top Field, as the area down to the bottom of Bishopscourt Drive, was known, was a pasture field, and the area now occupied by the green was a large, sunken area, thought to be caused by the long-ago collapse of an underground limestone cave. This was filled in by McCarthy's builders, when they built the estate. There used to be a double row of beech trres at the top of the field, and these marked an avenue which used to lead to the original house before the African Missions bought it. There was no trace of this avenue by the time my parents rented Wilton Park House in 1943, just an unfenced, rough track down to our house. I think there is still one beech tree left.
I fully support your campaign to retain this green amenity space, far too much urban building has gone on without any consideration for people to have recreation areas, particularly as gardens of new houses are now more like pocket handkerchiefs in size! My three brothers and I benefitted so much from the space we had in and around our home, (Wilton Park House had a large garden then) that I would like to see the children of the area having the same space to spread themselves. The best of luck to your efforts.
